Remember when you started your career? And the relationships you built right off the bat? What type of an impact did those relationships have on who you are today?Public accounting does a great job of fostering connections between start classes. You train together, travel together, and are in the trenches together. This taught me valuable lessons in comraderie, teamwork, support, and communication. But best of all, it taught me how to create friendships in the workplace, the gift that keeps on giving!Delighted to reconnect with friends every year at Deloitte Omaha's annual CPE event.Missing you, Renato Melo, CFA!#acccounting #omaha #publicaccounting

๐ #MondayMotivation: PwC and the Oscars Mix-Up ๐ The 2017 Oscars presented us with an unforgettable scene when "La La Land" was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture winner, a title that rightfully belonged to "Moonlight." Behind this mix-up were worldโs leading accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) partners Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, who were responsible for the critical task of counting the 7,000 votes from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ensuring the correct winners were announced. ๐The Role of PwC: PwC's duty was to manually count the ballots for the Oscars' 24 categories and safeguard the results until they were revealed on stage. โ Counting Process: Cullinan and Ruiz, along with a small team, undertook the meticulous process of manually counting votes to prevent any single system or computer from housing the results, ensuring the integrity and security of the process. โ The Error: Despite the rigorous protocols, a momentary lapse resulted in the wrong envelope being handed to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, leading to the mix-up. As we tackle our own professional challenges, let's carry forward the lessons of the Oscars mix-up: embrace accountability, uphold the highest standards of integrity, and always be prepared to correct our course with grace and professionalism. Wishing everyone a week of #success, #learning , and growth.

We had the Oscars ceremony this morning and there were a few things which I found to be personally interesting!1. Accountants don't usually come to mind when we think about the Academy Awards. But did you know that PwC is the official 'accountant' for Oscars and actually plays a pivotal role in it? The backstory behind this being, there were a few irregularities with the nominations in 1935 which led to a huge media uproar. Post which PwC has been associated with the Academy awards for almost a century now! What does it do exactly? Count votes, ensure the secrecy of the results, and "stem the tide of unfavorable industry sentiment." They were also in news recently in 2017 when the winner of the best picture was supposed to be 'Moonlight' but was wrongly given to 'La La Land' due to a 'human error' by a PwC employee backstage!2. 'Rags to Riches' story always fascinates people. Though Robert Downey Junior's (RDJ) story is not exactly that, it's inspiring to see him finally win that coveted honor. RDJ's career of over 4 decades in the space had not been without its dark corners- from legal troubles and drug addiction which led to jail time and a sever downfall in the late 90s. What makes me root for him, is not only the positive demeanour he carries despite all of his dark past, but the brilliant comeback he was able to do. Who doesn't like a good comeback story? :)3. The Oscar Mystery: Naming and BrandingWhy are the Academy Awards called Oscars? Actually noone knows for sure! One popular theory, is that Margaret Herrick โ a former Academy librarian thought that thestatuette looked likeher Uncle Oscar. After hearing that, Academy staff started referring to the award as Oscar unofficially! Crazy, right? #oscars #oscars2024 #media #oppenheimer Warner Bros.
